The biocide used in vase solution for the preservation of flowers is 8-HQC.
A standard preservative solution containing 2% sucrose and 200 mg dm^-3 citrate or sulfate of hydroxyquinoline (8-HQC or 8-HQS) is often used to prolong the vase life of cut flowers.
The 8-HQC is a very important and effective biocide used in the floral industry. Thus, incorporating 8-HQC either in the preservative solution or as a pulse treatment would restrict microbial growth and subsequent vascular blockage and thus promote water uptake.
