Dormancy in potatoes can be broken by the use of Thiourea, Ethylene chlorohydrin and Potassium thiocyanate.
Potato tuber dormancy is defined as an inability to sprout under conditions that are favorable for sprouting.
Thiourea - soaking the potato tuber in 1%, aqueous solution for 85 hour is suggested to break the tubers' dormancy.
Ethylene chlorohydrin is highly volatile and the gas aids in breaking dormancy. Remove the tubers, air-dry, and hold at 18 - 25°C.
Potassium thiocyanate solutions gave excellent results in forcing early sprouting. The rest period of cut sets was materially shortened when the tubers were soaked in 3- or 2-percent solutions of potassium thiocyanate.
