The edible banana is Triploid.
Wild diploid accessions are seeded whereas edible bananas are seedless, parthenocarpic and vegetative propagated. Most of these cultivars are triploid, even if some edible bananas are cultivated in Asia, the origin of Musa species.
The gametes in the 2N pollen grains or 2N eggs are functional and on fertilizing a normal gamete they give triploid progeny. The triploid bananas are sterile and most sterile plants produce no fruits.
