Warfarin is a synthetic derivative of dicoumarol, and since 1948 has had a major role in slaughtering rats and mice by stimulating internal bleeding.
It was the first anticoagulant rodenticide. It was registered for use in 1950. Warfarin was discovered in moldy sweet clover that had made a herd of cattle sick.
