Arka Upkar is the improved variety of medicinal Yam.
Medicinal yams are robust, perennial, branched, climbers native to tropical Asia, Africa and South America. The underground rhizomes or tubers contain alkaloids like diosgenin and pannogenin and are used for the synthesis of antiarthritic, anti-inflammatory, antifertility and anabolic drugs.
This variety is a high-yielding clone released recently. The plants are very vigorous with a stout, robust vine, bearing broad dark green leaves: The tuber branches are thick, broad and deep. It has a higher diosgenin content of 3.5 to 4.0 percent.
