Prognathous type of head refers to the long axis of the head that is horizontal and in line with the long axis of the insect's body.
In dragonflies and mayflies, the mouthparts are oriented downwards concerning the cephalocaudal axis (orthognathous), whereas earwigs and stoneflies have prognathous (forward projecting) mouthparts.
