Much hoeing is not advisable in carrots as the smell of the leaves attracts carrot flies.
Hoeing is the process in which entire surface soil is dug to a shallow depth with the help of hoes manually or mechanically, weeds are uprooted and removed.
Hoeing will attract carrot flies and they will lay eggs in the disturbed soil/cracked fields. This insect is a pest of gardens and farms, and mainly affects the crop of carrots, but can also attack parsnips, parsley and celery.
