Oil palm is pollinated by Weevil.Weevils are beetles belonging to the superfamily Curculionoidea, known for their elongated snouts. They are usually small, less than 6 mm in length and herbivorous.
The pollinating weevil, Elaedobius kamerunicus (EK) has been known to be the most efficient insect pollinator of oil palm and has successfully improved oil palm pollination and increased the yield.
Pollination occurs because this beetle is attracted by the scent of flowers, especially male flowers that are stronger in aroma than female flowers. Its introduction has greatly reduced the need for assisted pollination.
