Segmental allopolyploidy is an intermediate point between autopolyploidy and allopolyploidy. These are both recombinations within subgenomes (disomic inheritance) and between subgenomes (tetrasomic inheritance) that occur during meiosis.
The effects of autopolyploidization at morphological, physiological and molecular levels have been explored and no evident phenotypic superiority of polyploid lines concerning the parental diploid lines has been found. There were DNA methylation changes between diploids and polyploids, indicating that polyploidization alters the epigenetic patterns in potatoes.
