Strains of Bt produce toxins, which confer resistance against Lepidopteran larvae, Dipteran insects as well as coleopteran insects.
Bt (Bacillus thuringiensis) strains synthesize Crystal (Cry) and cytolytic (Cyt) toxins, at the onset of sporulation and during the stationary growth phase as parasporal crystalline inclusions.
Cry proteins are specifically toxic to the insect orders Lepidoptera, Coleoptera, Hymenoptera, and Diptera, and also to nematodes.
B. thuringiensis serves as an important reservoir of Cry toxins for the production of biological insecticides and insect-resistant genetically modified crops.
