Tympanum is present in labial palpi of Sphingidae insect.
The Sphingidae are a family of moths called sphinx moths, also colloquially known as hawk moths, with many of their caterpillars known as “hornworms”; it includes about 1,450 species.
Specialized hearing organs, known as tympanal organs, have evolved in at least seven different orders of insects. Tympanal organs are usually defined by the presence of a tympanal membrane. They are backed by an air-filled space or cavity and are innervated by a chordotonal sensory organ.
