Usually people use to say they work hard to get things done where as few people hardly work to get thing done..
2 decades back people use to accounting manually and record each and every transaction in journal, ledger, register, p&l and balance sheet to prepare financial statements and which required lot of effort to finding mistake now a days lot of tools available to pass one record every thing done with analysis.. this smart work become possible due to use of latest technology and require few recourses.
Now smart people focus on analysis to set new benchmarks where as hard working will busy preparing financial.
Smart work is more about applications of mind at right time at right place which lead to use lesser resource and time but we always remember hard work is the foundation of smart work. Until the better solution is discover things are hard.

I think "hard work" is when we are getting minimum output in maximum time & on the other hand when we are getting maximum output in minimum time & with very small effort , then it is called " smart work"
