Cucubitacin is the glucosides present in bitter gourd.
Bitter gourd belongs to cucurbitaceous family. It produces compounds that add to its bitter taste.
When extremely bitter, ingestion of bottle gourd can cause rapid onset diarrhea, vomiting, gastrointestinal bleeding and hypotension due to release of a substance named cucurbitacin. It acts as an anti-herbivore chemical and an insecticide.
