Hedgerow intercropping, also known as alley cropping, consists of growing one/two rows of perennials trees or shrubs (preferably leguminous) at a close spacing in the form of hedges. These hedges are spaced 4 - 8 m, and crops are grown simultaneously in between the hedgerows.
Hedgerows are useful to prevent animals from straying, protect crops from wind and prevent soil erosion, also define the visual boundaries of the farm property. And at the same time, it is best suited for mechanized fruit cultivation.
