Cost price of 12 oranges is equal to the selling price of 9 oranges and the discount on 10 oranges is equal to the profit on 5 oranges. What is the percentage point difference between the profit percentage and discount percentage?
A. 20
B. 22.22
C. 16.66
D. 15
E. None of These
Answer: Option B
Solution(By Examveda Team)
Ratio of selling price and Cost Price,SP : CP = 12 : 9 =4 : 3
Profit of 3 oranges = Rs. 1 (Let CP = Rs. 1)
Profit = $$\frac{1}{3}$$ = 33.33%
and, Discount = 11.11%
Since,
CP : SP : MP = 3 : 4 : 4.5
Profit doubles that of discount.
So, % point discount = 33.33% - 11.11% = 22.22% point.
Detail Explanation:
12 C.P = 9 S.P,
So profit % = $$\frac{{12\,{\text{C}}{\text{.P}}{\text{.}} - 9\,{\text{C}}{\text{.P}}{\text{.}}}}{{9\,{\text{C}}{\text{.P}}{\text{.}}}}$$ = 33.33.
Then it is said that,
5 SP - 5 CP = 10 MP -10 SP
From that we get relation between MP and SP, that is,
27 SP = 24 MP(With help of 12 CP = 9 SP)
THEN DISCOUNT % = $$\frac{{{\text{MP}} - {\text{SP}}}}{{{\text{MP}}}}$$ = 11.11%
So, % point discount = 33.33% - 11.11% = 22.22%

12* CP = 9* Sp
Cp/Sp = 3/4. - - - [1]
10* discount = 5* profit
= 5* (Sp-Cp)
So, Discount /(Sp-Cp) = 1/2. - - - [2]
From [1], Sp-Cp = 4-3 = 1
So divide [2] by 2 to get Sp-Cp as 1
Then [2] becomes,
Discount /(Sp-Cp) = 0.5/1
Mp=Sp+Discount =4+0.5 =4.5
Now,Cp:Sp:Mp = 3:4.5:4 = 6:9:8 - - - [3]
P% = P/Cp *100.= (8-6)/6 *100 = 100/3 = 33.33%
From [3],
Discount % = discount /Mp *100
=(9-8)/9 *100 =11.11%
So, P%-D% = 33.33-11.11 = 22.22%
Let cost price of one orange =1
cost price of 12 oranges=12
selling price of 9 oranges =12
selling price of 12 oranges =12×129=16
Profit in selling 12 oranges =16-12=4
Profit percentage =4×10012=33.33%
Selling price of 10 oranges =12×109=403
Discount on 10 oranges = profit on 5 oranges =4×512=53
Marked price of 10 oranges =403+53=15
Discount percentage =(53)×10015=11.11%
Required difference
= 33.33% - 11.11% = 22.22%

5 SP - 5 CP = 10MP -10SP
12 CP= 9 SP
27 SP=24 MP
THEN DISCOUNT % = (MP-SP)/MP
substitute MP=27SP/24
we get disc % 11.11
See given that,
Discount on 10 oranges is equal to profit on 5 oranges.
It means
Profit on 5 oranges are Double than the Discount on 10 oranges or Discount is half on 10 oranges than profit on 5 oranges.
And, total discount = 33.33%.
So, discount on 10 oranges should be 11.11%.
Thus, profit on 5 oranges = 22.22% (Double than discount on 10 oranges).
This is not mentioned in the question but you need to depict it by reading question one or two times.
