Primary pollutants cause pollution by their direct release into the environment . The substance released may already be present in some quantities, but it is considered a primary pollutant if the additional release brings the total quantity of the substance to pollution levels.
Even SO2,NO2 and CO are also primary pollutants. The Oxides of Sulphur, Oxides of Nitrogen, Oxides of Carbon, Particulate Matter, Methane, Ammonia, Chlorofluorocarbons, Toxic metals etc. are examples of primary pollutants.
These are emitted directly into the air.
Examples of secondary pollutants are Ground Level Ozone, Smog and POPs (Persistent Organic Pollutants).
