Find the selling price of goods if two salesmen claim to make 25% profit each, one calculating it on cost price while another on the selling price, the difference in the profits earned being Rs. 100 and selling price being the same in both the cases?

A. Rs. 1200

B. Rs. 1600

C. Rs. 2400

D. Rs. 2500

E. Rs. 3000

Answer: Option A

Solution(By Examveda Team)

Let CP's be Rs. 1000 each, their respective SP will be,
1000 == 25%↑ ⇒ 1250 [person calculating profit on the CP]
1000 == 33.33%↑ ⇒ 1333.33 [The person calculating his profit on SP: 25% of SP = 33.33% of CP]
The difference turned out to be = 83.33. This has occured when we have assumed the CP as 1000. But, we are given difference of Rs. 100
So, on comparing,
83.33 = 1000
1 = $$\frac{{1000}}{{83.33}}$$
100 = $$\frac{{1000}}{{83.33}} \times 100$$   = Rs. 1200

    25%= 1/4
    CP SP P
    1) 4 5 1
    2) 3 4 1
    GIiven that both goods have same SP
    1) 4×4 5×4 1×4
    2) 3×5 4×5 1×5

    1) 16 20 4
    2) 15 20 5

    Diffrence between profit is 100
    But we have, 5-4=1
    1= 100
    Then 20= 2000
    Hence, 2000 is right option.

    Sales man 1(SM1) :-
    He takes profit as 25% of CP
    CP of SM1= x
    SP of SM1 = y
    x + 25%x = y..............................................(A)
    125%x = y
    y = 125x/100
    y = 5x/4.................................................(1)

    Sales man 2 (SM2) :-
    He takes profit as 25% of SP
    CP of SM2 = z
    SP of SM2 = y (because selling prices of two sales man are same)
    z + 25%y = y.......................................(B)
    z + 25y/100 = y
    z + y/4 = y
    z = y - y/4
    z = 3y/4
    y = 4z/3...........................................(2)

    equate (1) and (2)
    5x/4 = 4z/3
    x/z = 16/15
    So, x/z = 16a/15a ( create new variable "a" because we didn't know the correct value)
    x = 16a
    z = 15a

    substitute x in (A)
    16a + 25% (16a) = y
    y = 16a + 4a ( here "4a" is profit for SM1)
    y = 20a

    substitute y, z in (B)
    15a + 25% (20a) = 20a
    15a + 5a = 20a ( here "5a" is profit for SM2)

    Difference between profit of two sales mans is 100
    So, 5a - 4a = 100
    a = 100

    Then,
    y = 20a = 20 (100) = 2000
    x = 16a = 16 (100) = 1600
    z = 15a = 15 (100) = 1500

    easiest way solve such q.-:
    given gain = 25% = 1/4
    now case 1 , calculating profit on cp.
    let cp= 4x so profit = 4x*1/4=x so sp= 4x+x=5x
    now case 2, calculating on sp
    let sp=4y so profit = y
    now ATQ
    5x=4y and y-x=100, solve eq. you get x=400 so sp =5x=5*400=2000

    But it is given that the selling price is same in both the cases. why are you taking two different selling prices and same cost prices. In this case cost prices will be different.

    Second person is calculating 25% of his profit on the Selling price.
    And the selling price is
    1000 + 25% of 1000 = 1250.
    Now, 25% of 1250 = 312.5.

    25% = 312.5
    So, 100% = 1333.33
    Thus, the actual profit on the Cost price would be,
    (333.33*100)/1000 = 33.33%.

    Now, Is it clear @Divya?
