Pearl millet or bajra are grown mostly in the rainfed regions. Later pearl millet is exploited to the extreme to improve its productivity to ensure food supply and poverty alleviation through strategic research on genetic diversification of parental lines of single-cross hybrids. Hybrid HB1 was released in 1965 from University PAU, Ludhiana thus making India the first country to develop the first single cross pearl millet hybrid.
