Maize has become a staple food, cultivated in almost all parts of the world. The leafy stalk of the plant produces pollen inflorescences, also called "tassels", and separate ovuliferous inflorescences, called "ears", which when fertilized, produce kernels or seeds. In maize plants made of silk and tassels, the tassels appear first.
