The term Janapada means 'the foothold of a tribe'. The 16 Mahajanapadas of the Post-Vedic period were mentioned in Mahabharata as well. Out of these 16, the Anga and Magadha were sited in Bengal and symbolise the Post-Vedic era in Bengal. These two are mentioned in Atharvaveda.
