The PMGSY was launched in December, 2000, as a fully funded centrally sponsored scheme with the objective of providing connectivity to the eligible unconnected habitations in the core network with a population of 500 persons and above (as per Census, 2001) in plain areas and 250 persons and above in hill states, tribal areas and desert areas.
