Retting is the process employing the action of micro-organisms and moisture on plants to dissolve or rot away much of the cellular tissues and pectins surrounding bast-fiber bundles, thus facilitating the separation of fiber from the stem.
This is the process involved in the production of linen from the flax stalks and coir from the coconut husks.
