Roughage is the portion of plant-derived food that cannot be completely broken down by human digestive enzymes.
Dry roughages include hay, straw, and artificially dehydrated forages, which contain about 90% of dry matter. Silages are formed from green forages such as grass, alfalfa, sorghum, and corn preserved in a silo at dry matter contents of 20 to 50%.
