Crossover percentage value of linked genes (see linkage) that are exchanged during the process of crossing over during the first prophase of meiosis. It can be calculated by the percentage of offspring that show recombination and is used to map the genes on a chromosome.
A recombination frequency of 50% is therefore the maximum recombination frequency that can be observed and is indicative of loci that are either on separate chromosomes or are located very far apart on the same chromosome.
