The enzyme responsible for the hydrolysis of urea is Urease. It catalyzes the hydrolysis of urea, forming ammonia and carbon dioxide.
It is found in numerous bacteria, fungi, algae, plants and some invertebrates and also in soils, as a soil enzyme. They are nickel-containing metalloenzymes of high molecular weight.
