India's first train ran from Mumbai to Thane in 1853. The first train on the Indian sub-continent ran from Bori Bunder in Mumbai to Thane at 3.30 pm on 16^th April 1853. The 14 carriage train carried 400 guests and covered a distance of 34 km. The inaugural journey received a salute of 21 guns.
