The oldest 'extant' Tamil literature is Tholkaapiyam. It is a grammar treatise. Tholkaapiyam is variously dated by scholars from 100 CE to as far back as 500 BC (a few even stretch it back upto 1000 or 5000 BC, but those claims cannot be established solidly!)
