Prior to the Maurya Empire, Kalinga was ruled by the Nanda Empire, who reigned from their capital in Magadha until their demise in 321 BCE. Chandragupta Maurya, Ashoka's grandfather, had previously attempted to capture Kalinga but had been defeated.
