Answer & Solution
Answer: Option
B
Solution:
The largest dry dock in India is situated at Cochin (Kochi), Kerala, at the Cochin Shipyard. Cochin Shipyard is one of India's leading shipbuilding and ship-repair facilities and is located on the west coast of India along the Arabian Sea.
A dry dock is a specially constructed basin from which water can be removed so that a ship can be brought onto a dry surface. It allows engineers and workers to carry out activities such as ship construction, major repairs, maintenance, painting, and inspection of the underwater parts of ships.
The Cochin Shipyard dry dock is particularly important because it can accommodate large and heavy vessels. The facility has played an important role in India's shipbuilding and ship-repair industry and is capable of handling major vessels, including large commercial and naval ships.
Why the other options are incorrect:
Option A — Mumbai: Mumbai has several important shipbuilding and ship-repair facilities, including Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders. However, the largest dry dock in India is associated with Cochin Shipyard, not Mumbai.
Option C — Marmugao: Mormugao (Marmugao), Goa, is an important natural harbour and major port on India's west coast. However, it is not the location of India's largest dry dock.
Option D — Kolkata: Kolkata has important shipbuilding and ship-repair facilities and is a major port on the eastern side of India. However, it does not have India's largest dry dock.
Exam Point: Remember the association — Cochin Shipyard → Cochin (Kochi), Kerala → Largest dry dock in India.
Answer: Option B — Cochin
