There are five different theories of failures which are generally used
(1) Maximum Principal stress theory ( due to Rankine )
(2) Maximum shear stress theory ( Guest - Tresca )
(3) Maximum Principal strain ( Saint - venant ) Theory
(4) Total strain energy per unit volume ( Haigh ) Theory
(5) Shear strain energy per unit volume Theory ( Von – Mises )
