The Indian Independence Act of 1947 gave princely states an option to accede to the newly born dominions India or Pakistan or continue as an independent sovereign state. At that time more than 500 princely states have covered 48 percent of the area of pre Independent India and constituted 28% of its population.

Constituent Assembly of Jammu and Kashmir was a body of representatives elected in 1951 to formulate the constitution of Jammu and Kashmir.

In October 1947, Pashtun tribals at the behest of the Pakistani government, invaded Kashmir. When the required withdrawal did not occur for several years Jammu & Kashmir National Conference which was the largest political party in the state recommended convening the constituent assembly in a resolution passed on 27^th October 1950.

6^th Amendment Act, 1965 came in April, 1965. It replaced the words Sadar-i-Riyasat and Prime Minister by Governor and Chief Minister, respectively in the State Constitution. The First Schedule has been omitted by this Act.

The Constitution of Jammu and Kashmir was the legal Constitution which established the framework for the state government of the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir. The constitution was adopted on 17^th November 1956, and came into effect on 26^th January 1957. It was rendered infructuous on 5^th August 2019 by an order signed by the President of India and ceased to be applicable on that date. It also included Ladakh.

As of 2002, 29 amendments were made to the Constitution of Jammu and Kashmir. The Constitution, as of 2002, had 158 articles divided into 13 parts and 7 schedules.

20^th Amendment Act, 1988 Act came in the year 1988. This Act amended Section 47 (1) (Composition of Legislative Assembly) of the State Constitution and replaced the Legislative Assembly seats from 100 seats to 111 seats.

26^th Amendment Act, 1999 came in the year 1999. This Act amended Sixth Schedule and added 'Gojri', a regional language in this Schedule of the State Constitution.
