This tribal movement was led by Tirut Singh and Bar Manik, who fought against British attempts to take over control of the Khasis Hills. In 1832, the war ended when British captured Tirut Singh, as one of chief betrayed him for some pieces of gold. He died on July 17,1835. His death anniversary is commemorated every year as a state holiday in Meghalaya.
